Frank Tomecek, M.D., specializes in neurosurgery – surgery of the nervous system, specifically of the brain and spinal cord. “When I went to medical school,” he said, “the nervous system was something that fascinated me because there was so much unknown. I thought, ‘We can transplant the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys, but not the brain or spinal cord.’ It was an area where there was still a lot to learn and I felt I could really grow with the specialty.”
Dr. Tomecek’s inspiration to get into health care happened at a young age. He said, “When I was a kid, I had asthma and some other medical problems. I was interested in becoming a doctor because they helped me so much and made feel a lot better.” His mother was also an important factor in his career, pushing him to do better in academics once she realized how smart he was.
Dr. Tomecek’s goal is to work with each patient to achieve the best outcome and to provide the best quality of life possible. He says, “I focus on the overall care of the patient and prescribing the right treatment, not just on performing an operation. Many people don’t need surgery, so I’m happy to help people with therapy or in other ways to avoid surgery.”
Dr. Tomecek’s education includes:
• Bachelor of Science degree from DePauw University in Indiana, 1983
• Medical degree from Indiana University, 1987
• Surgical internship and residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan, 1993
• Neurosurgical spine fellowship at the University of Louisville Hospital, 1993
When Dr. Tomecek isn’t working at the clinic, he can be found enjoying time with his family, scuba diving, golfing, snow skiing, playing tennis and cycling.
